Key benefits of ongoing professional development for different stakeholders

The aim of this article is to examine the key benefits of ongoing professional development for different stakeholders within an organisation. There is no doubt that an organisation such as a retailer has many stakeholders. However, this article examines how ongoing professional development benefits some of the key stakeholders.

What are stakeholders?

Johnson et al. (2006) define stakeholders as individuals or groups who depend on an organisation to fulfil their own goals and on whom, in turn, the organisation depends. According to BBC (2020) a stakeholder is anyone with an interest in a business.

Benefits of ongoing professional development for employees

One of the key stakeholders of an organisations is its employees. Certainly, employees can benefit greatly from ongoing professional development and the benefits are for themselves and their organisations. Firstly, ongoing professional development makes employees satisfied and satisfied employees are highly productive (most of the time) which is something any organisations love to cherish.

Secondly, ongoing professional development helps employees add value to their CVs which should help them in future job search. It also helps them keep their qualifications up to date and build confidence to stand out from the crowd. Thirdly, attending a training event provides them with an opportunity to network with fellow attendees which may sometimes lead to new career opportunities. And lastly but not least, it enables them to demonstrate their willingness to learn new skills.

Benefits of ongoing professional development for customers/clients

The customers/clients of an organisation can also benefit from ongoing professional development of members of staff. For instance, patients and clients can receive better service from health and social care workers who are continually updated with the new industry developments. Likewise, customers can receive better service from waiters of a restaurant who have gone through a customer service training.

Benefits of ongoing professional development for other stakeholders

The government of a country can benefit from ongoing professional development of employees in organisations. A highly developed workforce can meet both domestic and international demands which helps the government generate more revenues.  Likewise, ongoing development of employees is necessary for the government to implement new systems in the country.
