Public transport in Istanbul
Istanbul has a well-connected system of metros, trams, buses, ferries, taxis, and more (Visit Istanbul, 2025). Understanding the different options available will help you choose the most suitable mode of transport for your needs when you visit the city. Please make sure you purchase an Istanbulkart which is a rechargeable smart card used for public transportation.

Purchasing Istanbulkart
Istanbulkart can be purchased from yellow vending machines at almost every metro, tram, and funicular station, as well as from kiosks near public transport stops. One card can be used by up to 5 people. One person can tap the card reader once to let another person in and make a final touch to let himself/herself in by the end.
When entering a bus, tram, metro, or ferry, tap your Istanbulkart on the designated reader. The fare will be deducted from your card’s balance. You generally do not need to tap out when using it on most forms of public transportation in Istanbul.

Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia is in the Sultanahmet area of the Fatih district in Istanbul, on the European side of the city. Once a church, and now a mosque and a museum, it stands as a testament to Istanbul’s diverse past. When you walk through its grand halls, you will certainly be struck by the intricate mosaics and the sheer scale of its dome, a marvel of engineering.
Hagia Sophia
You need to pay the entrance fees to have full access to this landmark. Muslim worshipers can enter it during each prayer time for prayer (5 times a day) without the fees albeit with limited access.
Topkapi Palace
Topkapi Palace is situated very close to Hagia Sophia (10-minute walk). In fact, you can visit both attractions on the same day, though you should plan to spend at least 4 hours in Topkapi Palace alone.
Topkapi Palace is a stunning museum that includes four main courtyards interconnected to galleries and passages, a Harem, and several small courtyards, pavilions, and gardens.
