10 largest countries in the world by area

There are 195 countries in the world as of 2017. It is quite interesting that 10 out of these 195 countries occupy 49% of the earth’s entire land. The total land of the earth is approximately 149 million square kilometres. The aim of this mini article is to explore the top 10 largest countries in the world, measured in square kilometres of land area. However, it is worth mentioning that geopolitical boundaries may change dramatically as decades and centuries pass. Therefore, we cannot predict which countries will certainly be in the list of the top 10 largest countries in the world in the next century.

As you can see Russia is No.1 with a total area of about 17 million square kilometres, while Algeria is No.10 in the list. If Russia alone is the largest country in the world, then it is not hard to imagine how big the Soviet Union was.

Canada is the second largest country; however, it is the country with the most water in the world. The USA is the biggest economy in the world in terms of nominal GDP; however, it is 3rd in the world in terms of land area. China and India are two great Asian giants. They are usually in the list of top 10 in many things. In terms of land area, they are 4th and 7th in the world respectively.
